WORDS CAN HEAL
Words have the power to change a life in positive
ways. They can
chart a destiny. But they can also have the power to destroy a
life. Be careful, and choose your words
wisely. The lives of your
students may very well depend on it. Deb
Brown
In Hal Urban’s classroom there were signs saying:
“No put-downs – compliments spoken here”, “Kind words cost little but accomplish much”, “Celebrate today!”,
“Celebrate each other”, “This is a caring community”, “Win win words”

Realise now the power that your words command
if
you simply choose them wisely – Anthony Robbins
Instead of taking people for granted, laughing at
them, being sarcastic, putting them down, blaming or accusing, pointing out their faults, telling them they
are wrong, telling lies, swearing or using rude words, gossiping, using angry words or tone, demanding and
discouraging, avoid looking into people’s eyes when they are talking, show no facial expression or worse
frown, pull a face (implying you don’t believe them), interrupt them or talk across them
….. take note how those
negative words make you feel or even visualise someone speaking to you in that manner and remind yourself how
bad it makes you feel …. Why not be:
Words have the power to destroy or
heal.
When words are both true and kind,
they can change our world - Buddha
Encouraging and build people up, express
appreciation and gratitude, be truthful and honest, use polite and kind words, point out the good things
about them, use their names, request or ask for things, use a pleasant tone and be gentle with your words, be
genuine and sincere, laugh with them, listen to what they have to say and rather than gossip choose to say
nothing at all!
The real art of conversation is not only to say the
right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting
moment – Dorothy Nevill
